The Premier of Western Australia, Hon Colin Barnett MLA, has officially opened the Devil Creek gas plant, a joint venture between Australian energy company Santos and Apache Energy.
Devil Creek is Western Australia's third domestic gas processing plant and represents a material addition to the state's domestic gas supply capacity.
The plant processes gas piped from Santos' offshore Reindeer field in the Carnarvon Basin. The gas is then fed into the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline and supplied to WA's major gas users.
Santos has already struck four contracts for the sale of gas processed through Devil Creek, with CITIC Pacific's Sino Iron the foundation customer.
Santos Vice President WA & NT, John Anderson, said the formal opening of the plant was a significant milestone for the state and was further proof of Santos' commitment to supplying domestic gas to WA.
"This is the first gas plant development in this state for more than 15 years, and brings not only new supply capacity but also greater energy security for the state, which until now has been almost completely reliant on Varanus Island and the North West Shelf," he said.
"For Santos, this is another step in growing our WA business. We are already a major provider of gas to the WA domestic market and we are well positioned to meet further local demand for energy."
